Sew Excited!

So as you guys know, Monday was my 30th birthday.  One perk, I guess, of getting older is people give you gifts.  What I love about the people in my life, is they give me gifts I need, want and can really use.

My dad and stepmom gave me two awesome sewing books - the New Complete Guide to Sewing and SEW: Sew Everything Workshop.  I can't tell you how excited I was to get these books!  I'm definitely self-taught, with a figure-it-out-as-I-go attitude.  It's served me just fine most of the time, but I would love to know the "real" way to sew.  I especially wanted to know how to read a pattern!  Gosh, those are complicated.  Well, both books give very very good instruction on basic how-tos as well as patterns to follow.

Pair those books with the new serger my hubby bought for me, and I'm in sewing heaven!
This week, I was working on these two girly baby gift sets I needed to deliver.

But until another etsy order comes in, I'm free to just sew what I want - for ME!  I'm excited to start on one or two of the patterns in the SEW book - there's everything from mens boxers to a stuffed elephant and everything in between.

As I become more familiar with my serger, I think you guys can look forward to some simple tutorials here.  I am going to learn as I go, so why not help some of you at the same time?

30!

Wow, no matter how I look at it, I can't deny I'm turning 30 today!
For the last few months, I've been trying to figure out how 30 would feel -
I've even cried a few times.  Silly, right?
But it's hard admitting sometimes that I'm an adult.
I'd rather play and have fun all day like a kid.

So in honor of turning 30 years old today, here is a list of 30 fun things I plan to do to keep myself young!

30 run through the sprinklers with my boys

Gathered Flower Skirt

It's spring time!  Yay!  Who doesn't love spring?

But, here in southeast Texas, it means it's already getting hot!  We've been nearing 90 degrees already.  So for me, that means it's time to break out the skirts and summer dresses!

I think most of us own one of those light-weight jersey knit skirts, right?  You know - the stretchy, comfy skirt that is great for playing around with the kiddos AND lunch with the girls?

Well, I love my black one - but black?  In spring?  It was sooo boring and drab.

So I decided to embellish it a little - get it ready for spring, too!

I started off with an old shirt that I'd snagged on something and got a hole in.
I cut it into 1 inch wide strips.

Then I adjusted the tension and stitch length on my sewing machine to make some quick little ruffles.

Lay the gathered fabric in the design you want, and pin in place.

I sewed these on by hand - it took less than 10 minutes.
Clip your loose threads, and throw that spring skirt on!

Pretty, right?  Now I think this calls for some new cute shoes!
